Blue Carbon Mexico

Our Oceans, Our Future, Our Responsibility

Experiences From Northern California

At CEDO, we are working and developing proposals with a framework of reference on the results of updating the country’s NDC, and taking advantage of the experience of our organization, emphasizing the issues of blue carbon and climate change.

Coastal ecosystems are some of the most productive on Earth. They provide us with essential ecosystem services, such as coastal protection from storms and fish breeding grounds. We also know that they provide another integral service – sequestering and storing “blue” carbon from the atmosphere and oceans – and are therefore an essential piece of the solution to global climate change.

Climate change is possibly the greatest challenge facing humanity today. If we do not reduce or sequester the volume of greenhouse gases that we emit into the atmosphere, changes in weather and climate will have a cascade of effects that will impact all flows of energy and materials both within ecosystems and from nature to people (LPR, 2020). Climate change will soon become the largest driver of the loss of planetary biodiversity (IPBES, 2019).

  • % of the global carbon cycle circulates through the ocean. 83% 83%
  • % of Coastal habitats covering the total ocean area. 2% 2%

What is Blue Carbon?

Blue carbon is carbon that is captured and stored in coastal and marine ecosystems. This is especially important since, over the past 100 years, human activity has released excess carbon that causes climate change. Fortunately, our coastal ecosystems are incredibly efficient at removing harmful amounts of carbon from the atmosphere and can store it for thousands of years. Blue carbon ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrasses and salt marshes are among the most efficient carbon sinks on the planet.
